Margot Clayton AFCA (1928–2025)
Margot Clayton was born in England, but raised in Victoria, She studied art in the various places she lived after she was married--Niagara Falls, Argentina and Toronto. She finally returned to Victoria in 1979 and painted and taught painting in oils for 8 years.
Margot primarily worked in oils, but exploring watercolour techniques and experimenting with pastels deepened her appreciation for colour. She believed that each medium offers unique lessons, all of which can enhance an artist’s skill in their chosen form. Her favourite works were based on the unique West Coast forests which she missed during our years away.
Quote: "Art, like life, seems to be a never-ending learning experience. The fun is in the planning and gathering of material, the atmosphere of the surroundings and the friends made along the way. The painting itself is hard work and becomes a cluster of problems to be solved, but with each solution comes enormous satisfaction."
Margot was a talented and dedicated artist whose life and work touched many. She was an active member of the Victoria Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists since 1981, taking a turn at many of the various Chair positions over the years and continually volunteering her time and effort wherever she was needed. Her kindness, creativity, and spirit enriched our community, and she is deeply missed by all who knew her.
